The Cumberland Experience
I remember a time in the noughties when that original, famous ‘rock
-and-roll hotel’ seemed to be permanently shut. The old sign displayed
The Cumberland despite closed doors throughout the decade – a reminder of it’s illustrious and exciting past with Jimi Hendrix, Madonna,
The Killers and Lady Gaga amongst the bevy of stars who have graced
this landmark destination within the capital. Having reopened after a
long hiatus as The Hard Rock Hotel , it has rebranded in 2003 back to
it’s original moniker and continues to enthrall Londoners and non-Londoner’s alike. Ideally situated at Marble Arch, opposite Hyde Park, just
an amble away from Oxford Circus, Bond Street and Portman Square
and with the iconic gay-spot City of Quebec just around the corner it is
ideally situated.
The moment you enter the spacious, art-deco lobby brimming with
evocative memorabilia including drum kits, Marshal speakers, the
historic posters the life-size iconic London taxi and sometimes, like in
Spring when I visited, other legendary inclusions like the Delorean from
Back to The Future, you know this is a one-of-a-kind experience. There
is also the crowning experience of a dedicated Hendrix Suite, styled in a
nostalgic 1960s vibe which is reason to visit by itself. Other suites come
with Crosley record player and Fender Guitars complete with giant
comfy beds. The Cumberland Experience is that delightful ‘purple haze’
available to all Londoners and tourists alike.
Other than the novelty rooms, the centrepiece attraction is the SOUND
Café on the ground 昀氀oor serving American-inspired comfort food alongside live performances seven nights a week. Guests frequently gawp
and gasp at the sheer size of the main hall and fully appreciate the warm
welcome that ensues, courtesy of the hotel’s earnest helpful sta昀昀.
A rockstar-experience commences with check-in ‘Backstage’, in keeping with the theme, where guests can relax and complete formalities
whilst lounging on a sofa and sipping champagne, wine or soft drinks.
Hungry patrons can gorge on delicious snacks and treats from across
the Atlantic including burgers, hotdogs and milkshakes. SOUND Café
is essentially a 3-in-1 venue and the perfect spot for live music, sport,
food & drink and a buzzing atmosphere, creating the perfect venue for
get-togethers and celebrations.
With 900 bedrooms, ample meeting and event spaces and a newly
evolved F&B and entertainment o昀昀ering providing a plethora of choices
for diverse leisure and corporate guest needs. It is an ideal staycation
spot for music fanatics and others alike and recognised jewel of the
London hotel scene. So without further ado, make your way across that
crosstown tra昀케c and get yourself experienced at The Cumberland!!
